Romance scammer photos: how to check them

Stolen photos are real images of a real person taken from social media, modeling sites, or other public sources, used without that person's knowledge. AI-generated photos are images created by software that never depicted a real person at all. Both are common in romance scams, and they require slightly different checks.

• Save the clearest, highest-resolution version of the photo you have.
• Run it through a reverse image search tool.
• Check whether the image appears attached to a different name, especially on social media, modeling portfolios, or news articles.
• Repeat with a second and third photo from the same profile, since scammers sometimes mix a stolen photo with others.
• Note any result where the same face appears with a different identity, which is a strong signal.

• Unnatural skin texture that looks too smooth or too uniform.
• Backgrounds that blur strangely or objects that do not quite make sense.
• Ears, hands, or teeth with subtle asymmetries or extra detail.
• Every photo in a set showing near-identical lighting and framing, as if from the same generation batch.
• No matches at all on reverse image search despite the person claiming years of social media presence.

If a reverse image search finds nothing, that does not confirm the photo is genuine. It may mean the photo has not been indexed anywhere else yet, or that a stolen photo came from a private account not crawled by search engines, or that an AI-generated photo simply has no matches because it never existed elsewhere. A clean result lowers concern. It does not settle the question.
