Sugar daddy scam signs
Short answer
Sugar daddy scams typically involve a fake promise of a regular allowance, followed by a request for you to send money first, or to deposit and forward a check that later bounces. No legitimate arrangement requires you to pay upfront or process someone else's check.
Sugar dating arrangements exist and some are genuine. Scammers have also built entire scripts around the format, because the premise of unexplained money already lowers people's guard. Here's how the fake version usually plays out.

Open the toolThe fake allowance promise
A profile offers a generous weekly or monthly allowance, often before you've even had a real conversation. The number is usually higher than typical arrangements, meant to feel too good to question closely. This is bait, not a serious offer, in most cases where it arrives unsolicited and fast.
The 'prove your loyalty' payment
Before sending any allowance, they ask you to send a smaller amount first, framed as proof you're serious, a registration fee, a background check fee, or a deposit to 'activate' the arrangement. A genuine benefactor pays you, they don't ask you to pay them first to prove anything.
Check-cashing fraud
A more elaborate version: they send you a check or money order, often for more than agreed, and ask you to deposit it and wire back the difference, or to forward part of it to a third party. The check later bounces, and you're liable for the full amount your bank already let you withdraw.
This is one of the most damaging versions because it can take days or weeks for the check to bounce, after you've already sent real money out.
What a genuine arrangement looks like
- Money flows from them to you, not the other way, at any point
- No request to deposit a check and forward part of it elsewhere
- Willing to meet in person or have a real video call before any money changes hands
- No urgency or pressure around a first payment
- A public, checkable identity, not just a fresh account with no history
The checks to run
- Never send money to 'unlock' or 'prove loyalty' for an allowance
- Never deposit a check or money order from someone you haven't met and forward any part of it
- Reverse image search their photos before any financial conversation continues
- Search their name for a public presence beyond the dating profile
When to walk away
The instant any request involves you sending money first, depositing a check, or forwarding funds, stop and report the account. There is no version of a legitimate arrangement that requires this.

FAQ
Are all sugar dating arrangements scams?+
No, genuine arrangements exist. The scam pattern is specific: being asked to pay first, prove loyalty with money, or process someone else's check. Money should never flow from you to them before you've met and verified who they are.
What if the check already cleared in my account?+
A check can show as 'cleared' or available for days before it's confirmed as fraudulent, banks often let you withdraw funds before the check fully processes. If you've already wired money based on it, contact your bank immediately.
Can I recognize a fake check?+
Not reliably. Fake checks and money orders can look convincing. The safer rule is to never deposit and forward funds from someone you haven't verified, regardless of how the check looks.
